India taxes capital gains (profit from selling an asset) at different rates depending on what you sold (equity, debt, property, crypto, gold) and how long you held it. The Finance Act 2024 significantly restructured these — LTCG is now uniformly 12.5% across most assets, STCG on equity is 20%, and the indexation benefit on property was removed (with a grandfathering option).
