Enrico Fermi taught physicists to break impossible questions into small, knowable pieces. "How many piano tuners in Chicago?" becomes population × households × piano ownership × tuning frequency × hours per tuning ÷ tuner work year. Every piece you get wrong averages out.
Rule of thumb: being within an order of magnitude (10×) is a good estimate. Being within 3× is excellent.
